1400 per month before tax and NI

1118 after tax and NI, but before any other stoppages such as pension, union fees and so on

Thank you Ethel.Shes been getting 975 and didn't think it was right.
I knew someone on AB would know
Does she have other stoppages?
Does she have any adjustment to her tax code such as unpaid tax from earlier years being collected through the code?
Is she definitely paid monthly? Some employers pay 4weekly.
Or maybe she pays pension or some other salary deduction- share schems, BUPA etc
Has she changed job recently? Without a P45 or P46 (or a P38 if she's a student) - she may have been put onto Basic Rate.

thanks everyone
yes she changed jobs in April and was put on emergency tax but last month and this month her tax code has been 543L.
no there is no other deductions, she does not pay into the pension scheme/BUPA until she has been there 6 months.
yes she is paid monthly not four weekly
her pay office are checking it but have told her that if there is a mistake she will have to claim a refund from the tax office.Surely the pay office should put it right?
You are right. If the pay office gets it wrong they can correct if its within the same tax year. Where she may need to contact the tax office is if the tax code is wrong and needs to be changed. The employer is required to apply the code advised by the tax office.

Thanks noahboy.Sorry I have only just seen your post.
Apparently they didn't take enough tax in May and June so they have taken all the back amount due in July. It should be straight for August.(hopefully)
