store liability

If you damage something outside a shop are they liable for the costs. My trousers ripped on a piece of metal that was raised off the ground outside a tesco store and I want to know if they will give me the money for the trousers (i only got them last week).

I had a long coat on and I went through those revolving doors at Asda and my coat went under it. It sounds really funny but it was scary at the time...it nearly dragged me under the door like a cartoon haha! Anyway my coat was all ripped, I took it to the customer services and she said they would get it dry cleaned and I was like hm well a dry clean won't fix it and she filled out a little form, two days later I got a letter asking me to take the receipt for the coat into Asda. I took the receipt and they gave me the money there and then, and they went through the motions...yknow big apology and they'll do something about it. They havent got those doors anymore so I probably made them get new ones lol! Oh, and it wasn't an Asda/George coat. :-)
