Protects things from freeze damage...
the first two are examples of depression of freezing point of a solution by adding a solute.  not sure how this links with farmers.
Clanad is correct.This is obvious for the first two examples.  Overhead irrigation protects plants from frost damage due to the phase change from liquid to solid (freezing) being an exothermic reaction (gives off heat).  The heat lost from the plants to the atmosphere is replaced by the heat released when water changes to ice.
