Oh sorry, thought, from what you said in the post that opened this thread, that you were aware that the answer was one man with an O added at the end of the name to make another name.

As stated on this thread you are quite right that BERNARDO fits the clue equally well - but as Lie-in KIng says the compiler is probably looking for LEONARDO as it perhaps the more obvious male name.

I am afraid LEO doesn't help with the rest of the clue and it is just a coincidence that LEO is at the start of the preferred answer.

You and me both! And I have been trying for that pen for thirty years nearly! Won three runners-up prizes but never that pen and sadly I have heard it said that the quality of the pen is not what it used to be. Good luck anyhow.

Thanks again, Catron. I have only been trying every week for the pen since I retired, so have a long way to catch you up., but I've been doing the General Knowledge and the Herculis for much longer...no joy, though a friend of mine has won the GK and been a runner up. Not fair is what I say!

Bernard is one man - Bernardo is another, Bernard + O = Bernardo.

Both fit perfectly but Leonardo is very likely to be the right answer.

If Leo had anything to do with the clue how do you account for the NARD?

Wrong Cleocima - totally and utterly wrong. You will not see that LEO has nothing to do with the clue whatseover. You simply cannot go from LEO to LEONARDO without explaining the NARD and you have failed to do that. The two mens names are LEONARD and LEONARDO and LEO just does not come into it.
