I had a phone call the other evening from Barclays Bank. The woman phoning asked to speak to Mrs ....., so I answered yes thats me. she then asked me to give her some security information so that she could verify it was me!! I pointed out that she had phoned me, not the other way round, and that I was not prepared to give out information over the phone to someone who had phoned me.
What is it for I enquired - to give information about our services and your accounts. I said put it in writing to me, and she said she couldnt. I then said I did not want to continue the conversation.
If this was Barclays, can you believe they would try such tactics presumably to sell some of their products or services. Seems crazy to me when we are all being reminded to keep our details secure.

I've had exactly the same thing from Barclays.. they want your date of birth, etc and I said, "you tell me, you have all my info!"

they must be really thick.

quite so, sounds like a fishing expedition, good on you for keeping your wits about you.
No bank asks for security information by phone, or by e-mail - ignore any such requests.
