26d Saw
3d - summa laude. a treatise.
26d - saw.
3d I've only seen this as SUMMA *** LAUDE, not SUMMA LAUDE, though
For some reason the answerbank has blanked out the middle word, presumably it did the same to your post.
That word was S*U*M

cannot really see what could possibly be offensive about that word ????
Sorry, cannot type C?U?M
Still cannot see what is offensive about it , though....

Many thanks everyone (don't know why the '***' was blanked out either!)

lady alex.
a treatise is a summa if you then add *** laude makes for maximum praise. I fail to understand why answerbank blanked out the word ***.

Many thanks for all your help - now I just have the one clue left to get - 28 across ' Evensong has ING in it'

It's eight letters long and the letters I have are as follows:

A-R-N-D-

Sorry to be a nuisance!

Best wishes

Fiona
I'm afraid you are wrong, baitress.
Summa c?u?m laude means with maximum praise.
c?u?m means with
laude means praise
summa is an adjective meaning highest .
I have no idea what the latin for treatise is, but it ain't summa

ladyalex.
my copy of the New Shorter Oxford Dictionary gives the definition of
SUMMA plural SUMMAE(noun and adverb)
1. A Treatise
2. A Manual
3. A compendium of knowledge
4. a degree summa *** laude
Sorry baitress, I had never heard of summa=treatise before.
I had always understood it to be part of the latin phrase 'summa c/u/m laude'.

I thought that degrees/dissertations etc were awarded in ascending order on the basis of their being
c/u/m laude = with praise
magna c/u/m laude =with great praise
then
summa c/u/m laude =with the highest praise.
