Why do flies always fly around under lights - even when they are switched off during the day?

I presume it is the survival instinct to fly in the vicinity of an areal obstruction so make it harder for a predator to pick it off in mid-air. If you watch one fly for a while you'll see that it will occasionally make a very wide sweep to see if it can detect any aroma of its dinner.
