Is Francis Bacon considered to be of the late modern or post modern period?

I'm not sure he's really either, he's kind of his own man. He began painting before postmodernism but his work isn't really modernist either. His popes, for instance, hark back to the classical papal portraits of people like Titian, even while they're warped in a way you could call modernist or post-modern... so is probably neither.
