I think it may be earth

What about "OCHRE" which is an oxide of iron and has been used for centuries?

The letters are

E?R?T

My letters are e?r?h. We obviously have different answers for 43across.
I 'm pretty sure the answer is "earth" (as backed-up by The Columbia Enclyclopedia) - lots of earths eg fuller's earth were once regarded as elements. Answer for 43 across is Lee Shore.
