What was this creature?

I went outside to hang the washing on the line and there was something stuck to the line. It was wrapped almost the whole way around the wire, about 2 inches long, and a light browny beige colour. On closer inspection, it appeared to be hundreds of eggs laid by something. There were no gaps in it and it was completely flat on the surface. I managed to wipe them off with a cloth after a few attempts. Any idea what would have done this????

If it had not been used for a few days could have been a garden spiders eggs ???

It had been used only the day before. I thought spiders lay their eggs in clumps in corners or such like

Yes it did! I'm glad someone else has seen it too. Just need to find out what it is.
