An artificial channel for water. (6letters)
I've got sluice, but where the I appears it should be an O as the clue down
is Dutch settler in South Africa which I thought was Boer. If I don't use SLUICE the letters I have are ?L?O?E.

Thank you, sorry for the delay, just been to local cricket match.
I did want the 2nd letter to be L because the clue down is " implement for plucking guitar strings" (8).
I have ?L ?C?R?M giving me PLECTRUM.
