Planning permission for self-employed

Does anyone know if planning permission is required for someone who is a self-employed tradesman who keeps his tools and van at his home? The trade is not actually carried on at home, and very few materials are kept there - just a few bits of hardware such as pipe, nails, screws, etc.

I agree. If you are just keeping the van at home, no customers are visiting the house, and it is not perceived as inconveniencing the neighbours, I'd just get on with it.
To have the house categorised as for commercial purposes isn't what you want anyway - the implications are that you would be become part-liable for business rates on part of it, and when you sold up HMRC would be interested because part of your principal private residence would be liable for capital gains tax.
