HMRC will not give you this information, and it is not recorded at Companies House.

You will need to ask the company directly for the details. A copy of their VAT Registration Certificate would provide independent verification if you have reason to doubt them.

They certainly will confirm if that VAT number belongs to that company - it is not confidential information and should be printed on all the company's communications.

False VAT numbers is fraud and the taxman is keen to stamp it out.

I'd be very careful about dealing with this company as they are very overdue with their company returns and accounts.

Furthermore, Companies House WebCHeck lists the status of this 2 year-old company as "Active - Proposal to Strike off".

This proposal to strike the company off the register has either been triggered by the overdue filing of accounts and returns or by the directors wishing to close the company.

Thank you all for your help. Don't know whether you can help on this aspect re- the same company. It's a one man band and he claims to have sold the (non-existent) debt on. This may be a bluff, however it still makes me uneasy, having heard how these "heavies" can be intimidating, even if I'm the innocent party. Also, if the co. has not submitted a VAT return and it is struck off, can HMRC still pursue by enforcing a re-registration ?
