Is it possible to to bake chocolate cake that would survive a trip in the mail to Afghanistan (my son is serving with the army out there) and still be edible? Presentation is not an issue - it just needs to be edible after a couple of weeks of travelling.

if you are allowed to send it, i would think so. You could vacuum seal it. If you haven't got a machine, ask your local butcher to do it for you. I'm sure if you told him it was for one of "our lads" he would be happy to.
I would make a Loaf type cake, forget about frostings or buttercream, why not send a tub of readymade choc filling seperatly, and as crisgal suggested vacum seal it, jml do a sealing gizmo but expensive at around 30 ....then just pack it into a shoebox with pleanty of padding, even an extra bit of cardboard for renforcement at the top of the box wouldnt go amiss.

this is the best recipes I've found so far...using buttermilk or oils instead of marg or butter makes the cake moister and therefore lasts longer

...all the best to your son and all the troops out there , may they all come home safe and soon.....
