How would you react to this.
I stayed the other night with my cousin and her husband. The next morning I was sat on my bed fully dressed and saw her husband come out of their bedroom to go downstairs. I politely asked him if he would carry my portable oxygen cylinder downstairs. He replied that he was in a hurry and to ask my cousin to bring it down later. My sister, who was also staying, heard all this and said she would take it down. I don't think he had known my sister had heard this. A few minutes later my sister took the oxygen downstairs and lo and behold he is sat at the kitchen table eating toast and reading a magazine. It was about another 10 minutes before he left. I didn't say anything to my cousin as she is really nice and I didn't want to upset her. Why do some people act like this?

I hope he has a guilty conscious now. I could barely look him in the face when he came back. I was absolutely flabbergasted when he said that but expected his wife to carry it down. It is not very heavy but a bit awkward when you are disabled.

just becauase you are unable to carry it down yourself, you shouldn't have the expectation that other peole will do these things for you, could be lots of reasons, ie he wanted 10 mins to himself, he has a bad back, anything! perhaps he didnt want to, and you had other people that did bring it down, so it's not like you were abandoned upstairs

I agree with you bednobs.
i worked as a cab driver and i was amazing the amount of people who suddenly lost the use of their arms, when i pushed them up the ramp, and i would ask them to push too and half way through they would stop, bloody heavy all of a sudden how the hell i never done my back in. then you get the 20 mins of " poor me look what happened to me" storys
In the end bought a non disabilty cab, because of that.
sorry guys but i know this is not very PC and that not all people in wheelchairs are like this this only the ones that feel sorry for themselves. or think the whole world should feel sorry for them. that are giving the rest a bad name.

Why do some peole bother posting when they have nothing constructive to say?!
Sorry to hear that Polyanna, I see what some people are saying, like maybe he has a bad back etc which is understandable. However, what would annoy me is the fact he lied. Even if he was in a hurry, surely it wouldn't have taken him a minute to help you.
I would casually ask your cousin if her husband has a bad back or something, just to let her know. If he is a bit of a laxy liar behind her back, maybe she should know.
Good luck.

Thanks for all your answers.
The cylinders themselves are not that heavy - I can normally carry them say from room to room with no probem. The problem was that she has no bannisters and I didnt feel I could safely carry it downstairs on my own without falling. As far as I know, he has no back problems and he didn't appear to not want us there. It was complete mystery to me and my sister as to why he reacted like this.
