can anyone recommend a household flea treatment that actually works.

If you have some decent sized speakers maybe you could try playing Simon and Garfunkle at top volume when you go out. They will soon be gone
go to vet or petshop, you can buy a spray. one large can should be ok for a house.
don't forget to spray near the skirting board.
and up your skirt too. They get EVERYWHERE. Similarr to Crabs
Indorex or Acclaim, available from the vets, but cheaper on line.

Mrs Beeton recommends catching the fleas by dabbing them with a bar of well-moistened soap
You then finish them off by pinching them hard between the thumbnail and forefinger.
