land ownership
10 Answers
Just a daft question I know, however, when a person becomes owner of an average house with garden etc, it's his, but what about the earth below! how far down is it his, can it be taken by another party say for tunnelling under for cables/water etc. Is the owner limited to a certain depth or is everything to the earth's core his? Not that it's of much use down there, but what's the score, gotta be an argument here somewhere especially if solicitors etc are involved. Anyone know?

Hey MORELLO, nice one, I never thought of that! We could start charging fees from telephone mast companies and tv satellites etc for using our space to pass signals through. Sadly as a friend pointed out, it all probably belongs to the Queen, government or church as much does. I see what you're saying Hammer but when it comes to pipe repairs the cost is down to you from where it enters your property ie: the pavement! or is this another way of them getting more money out of you yet the pipe is still theirs, or is the land yours and they can't touch it until you authorise it?
It is my understanding that the owner of a freehold property owns the land within the titled deeds and the mineral rights below. Anyone such as a local council or utility company would need your sanction to encroach on said land.
By the way Morello, I hope I own more air space than head height, otherwise my house is trespassing a good few feet into public air space.
