I need advice on which camcorder to buy, mini dvd,digital 8,etc and around �300.

I assume you mean mini dv, dvd, or digital 8.
If you want to edit the results, then avoid dvd type camcorders as they use "lossy" compression which means the image is degraded as soon as it's recorded!

Digital 8 cameras use exactly the same recording technology as mini dv, but were introduced to encourage owners of existing analog 8 millimetre cameras to swith. Most of them will play back your old 8 mil videos, and allow you to transfer them to your computer via firewire. If you don't have any old 8 mil videos, the best choice is mini dv.
