Low Virtual Memory

I keep getting this message, telling me to free up some disk space.

After reading another post on here, I ran a memory check with Crucial's scanner tool, which advised that I had 256MB memory. As I had one free memory slot, I bought and installed a further 512MB.

Running the memory scanner again, Crucial recognised the new memory card as being installed, but when I checked my C: drive using the 'Properties' function, my PC still showed the drive as almost full, with only 650MB of free space left.

I have got rid of all unnecessary programs, deleted temp files, defragged etc. Can someone please tell me if I have overlooked something, or if I need to pay for a bigger memory upgrade? I'm running Windows XP Home edition.

The memory you bought is nothing whatsoever to do with space on your hard disk.

Think of the memory as the brain and the hard disk as the filing cabinet. Your hard drive is far too full. Do you have a second hard drive - Drive D perhaps? It will probably not be a 2nd hard drive but a second partition of the C drive.

If so, how much space is on that?

Yes, I have a D drive. It is completely free, with 17.6GB space. Can I move things onto here?

Yes - your personal files - music, photos, and so on

I've always assumed that the D drive was an internal thing, didn't realise it was accessible. Thanks, Ethel.
