What is the main difference between a sort code and a switch code with regard to banks in the UK?

A sort code identifies a bank branch. Generally the first 2 digits identify the bank ie 30-NN-NN is a Lloyds-TSB branch.

I don't know what you mean by a switch code, please clarify.

I know of "Swift codes" which are used for international money transfers. These identify your bank and if you're using them to receive money then you only need this if the money's not in Sterling. I've never heard of a switch code.
