Renault Clio Starting Problems/Overrevs?

I just bought a Vreg Clio, 50k miles, and sometimes it takes more than one attempt to start. It then runs fine. But twice now it has taken about 6 attempts to start, the battery cuts out (clock resets itself), and then it sounds like its high revving even though I am just sitting in idle. The only way I can describe the sound is like a loud constant rev. When I press the accelerator, you can hear it revving even more. The last time it did this, I left it for a bit and then it was fine.
Any ideas? Typically it's Sunday so no garages open to get it looked at!

Intermittent starting is usually caused by the TDC sensor steel tip being dirty and not sensing the magnetic pulse which is used to time the spark plug firing.

Thanks... but would that solve the over-rev thing too?
