They are the same as any Awards - a shop window for the artists being promoted, which usually reflect in sales of albums afterwards. I don't have a problem with the promotion aspect - just the idea that such an 'award' actually means anything. Anyone who is interested in music to that level knows who the best people are, and everyone else isn't bothered anyway - it's like 'Sports Personality Of the Year' (often a contradiction in terms!) but it's an evening's TV, watching who can actually cut it live, and seeing a load of celebs get loaded. If that's entertaining, then great - personally, I couldn't care less - and I speak as someone passionate about music.
Depends what you mean by relevant.
- It's very relevant to the record companies.
- With regard to the quality of music being produced, it's never been relevant.
- Very relevant to the ego of some artists (generally the newer one's).
- Relevant to the toddlers who voted (my favourite/best looking singer beat yours in the 'Best Newcomer' category so is therefore better) so they can form a basis for arguments at school about how 'cool' their taste in music is.
- Not at all relevant to true music fans.

OK, I don't watch pap like that
they should revise all the award titles to read things like:
best selling british album
best british album by a major record label
best single that actually got in the top 40 chart positions
Best solo artist trying to make as much money as possible
I'm not being an elitist idiot, but just utterly dispondent at the reputation of British music. Britain has some of the best musical talent in the world.
NO, it has THE BEST musical talent in the world. But instead of trying to convey this to the future of British music - our youth, we get Williams, Young et al shoved down our throats.
It's all about money. When was the last time anybody who isn't on a major label won anything. Don't get me wrong, most of my favourite bands are signed to major / medium sized labels. But I would just like to see some of the best
musicians get some recognition. At the end of the day The Brits isnt the place that MOST credible songwiters or musicians get recognition. I don't expect anything less so I don't watch it.
When they are voted for by CD:UK viewers, there is no point in watching it, or reading about it or even thinking about it. Because the brits are the opinions of:
1) Rich people in the industry who want to get even more rich
2) kiss a sses who want to climb up the musical corporate ladder
3) teenage boys and girls who have never heard of any musician pre 1991.
There is no point in me complaining about it because it doesn't represent me or my lifestyle.. -i.e - If you don't like it, don't watch it. So I don't.
I liken it to the "TOP 100 ICONS IN THE HISTORY OF PLANET EARTH" that I saw on VH1 the other day
Who won? Luther King? Mandela? Churchill? Kennedy? N Armstrong? Alexander
the Great? nope.

I think The Brits is awful but it is designed to be awful and for the masses. I suppose the alternative is an award ceremony for the lesser know artists signed to smaller labels with cult followings or even unsigned bands - but doesnt that negate the CULT side of things and add to the commercialism?

Having said all this, I am glad The Brits are still a bit naff, as I can have my own slice of great British music that doesnt get fed to the ignorant masses and spoilt. Maybe I shouldn't be too dispondent eh?
