The part containing .....'each clue containing a definition of the whole answer, but the subs. indication gives only the path of that apprentice.' .............Help!
Also, am I right in thinking that the centre square should be a chemical symbol, or am I totally on the wrong tack?
Regards

Following Mad Max and Midazolam's comments on the Listener 3994 thread I thought I'd give this a go.
I've really enjoyed wrestling with the puzzle (it is harder than this weeks Listener) but now I've solved all the clues fitted them in the grid got my 4 elements for the pot I'm not 100% what's wanted for the final square... (I'm assuming it's the obvious element that is a result of Alchemy unless I've missed something.)

Hi devadolly, once each of the 'four paths' is entered into the grid the ninth word in each list 'arrives' at the centre square and it is the last couple of letters of each of these ninth words that do not fit into the grid that provide the element symbols.
(It's also worth mentioning that each set of 9 clues has similar answer lengths for each constituent part.)
Hope that helps,
