Careers Advisors for Grown-ups

Is there such a thing as a national registry for careers advisors? My council have said that I can only visit their careers advisor if I'm on benefits etc. and I don't mind paying, but would like to know that I'm visting someone reputable if doing so.
I've tried using some of the books (I've got a yellow parachute etc.) but think I need to talk it out with someone.
Any ideas or suggestions welcome!

Hopefully, Learn Direct should be able to offer you help without paying a penny. However, if you do find that you do need a commercial service, you should start with the list of suitably qualified members of the Institute of Career Guidance:
