Looking to upgrade my old mp3 player to an iPod. Is an iPod nano better to exercise with than a conventional one? Heard that the conventional one has problems in terms of damage to the hard drive?

No item with a hard drive will be good to exercise with, including the iPod classic.

The nano or shuffle will be best, given that they use flash memory.
