growing peanuts

we planted a peanut ( monkeynut )in a tub and the stem and leaves are about 6 inches tall, What happens next ? do they flower? do the nuts grow under the soil or on the plants themselves? any advice would be appreciated,

I have a neighbour who leaves loads of peanuts on a bird table for squirrels, who promptlycv bury them in my garden! I've never had any sucess harvesting them and I live as far south as it's possible to get in the UK.
Maybe they don't like the salt in the air.
