Awake and aware both fit so I emailed Chris Feetenby. Here is his very quick, but not quite definitive response.

Thanks for your email. I don't do the crossword for YOU but I will pass your query on. I would have thought that both words answer the clue as it stands and will recommend that either be accepted, although the final decision will not be mine.

It's just a shame if half the people entering have NO chance of winning, as opposed to a " cat in hell's chance" !

Well, I think that in such a situation they should accept either answer. We are not mind-readers so don't know which one the compiler expected, but both of them, in my opinion, are valid answers then they should both be accepted.

Thank you for your e-mail regarding this Sunday's YOU crossword. I agree that both 'aware' and 'awake' should be accepted as correct answers for 22 across and have informed the department that checks the crosswords to do this.
