How to get a copy of original Deeds?

I have deeds to my house dating from 1972 which refer to earlier deeds of 1891. Where do I go to get a copy of the original deeds please? The property appears to have been built by a group of people (a cooperative?) rather than one person - was this the norm at this time?

Try your local Land Registry, they might be able to help you.
The property may have been lease hold upto 1972 and at that point split into plots and sold off, the land registry is best (they'll tell you where to go if nthing else or the council also
