Help! have I gone wrong?
27d County town with duke left for dead on Great North Road. I have ??l?o?d. The answer looks as though it should be Milford but it is not a county town and has nothing to do with a duke.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Milford :- M1+l(left)+for+d(dead)
I still don't see this. The M1 is not the Great North Road, and where is the county town in this answer? I suppose the duke could be MILORD?

Also, none of my 4 letter birds fits with M in 26a.

Hi amalgam
I am with you. I can't see why it is Milford and I cannot find a 4-letter bird which begins IM??
Has anyone else any ideas?
It's Belford. Town in Northumberland just off the Great North Road. Bedford (county town) with L (left) substituted for D (duke)
Used to be on the Great North Road, actually. They built a bypass in the 1980s

turnerjmw you are a star. As someone who was born and bred in Bedford I was drawn. to that but 33a put paid to that theory.
Thanks again
You're most welcome. I thought it was a cracking puzzle. Sorting out the six letter words took a bit of thought, but great fun, as ever from Araucaria

Cheers
