The hardest thing, in my opinion, is loading all the drivers for the components after building it. Some drivers are imediately out of date and require updating. Also because you've just attached so many components you normally have to reboot after each component has had it's drivers installed. This can be rather time consuming!
As for the PC being top of the range, you simply have to read specifications and reviews/articles of each piece of board you want to install. Of course that with technology advancing so quick new and better equipment supercedes what you've just installed in your PC!
Get some advice first, preferably from a gamer, as they will have a top of the range PC, or if not will be able to tell you what they would put in one had they the money.
If you are unsure at all, it is worth paying someone to build it for you.
I speak from experience as someone bought one to me after trying to build it themselves, and had managed to destroy their expensive new motherboard and processor.
