There appear to be thousands of people turning up outside the audition centre. I cant imagine that the panel actually see all of them so does anyone know how the acts are vetted? I know its entertainment but why does so much absolute rubbish get throught to the panel? And does the fact that this rubbish gets to be auditioned by the panel mean that some half decent acts miss out?
(I mean really really rubbish that would be laughed off the stage in your local pub)

Everyone must perform before a panel of judges who then make he decision as to whether or no they perform before Simon et al.

The rubbish gets through just for viewer entertainment, it would be a pretty boring show if everyone was great and got through to the next round.
A friend of mine went to the auditions - there are two ways to enter - either apply by mail or turn up on pre-arranged days. My friend did the former - and was invited to a 'pre' audition before the producers - not the panel, and she was turned down - but obviously there were some terrible acts that got through to see the panel so it could be filmed for entertainment value. Hence - people are devastated when they get bad reactions from the judges when they have already got through one stage. And how else do you think they have footage of their home lives and sob story's!
