I've worked in engineering most of my life, but never seen it spelt "adapter" as far as electrical appliances are concerned.

Daily Mail on Friday had the clue "Plug more appropriate for another plug" where the answer would be adaptor or adapter.
I plumped for adapter
ad = plug
apter = more appropriate

Both spellings are given in Collins English Dictionary
