Disconnection from the internet

What would cause dial up internet connection to be lost. This occurs randomly sometimes after a couple of minutes sometimes as soon as I try to go to a different website.

The system is quite old. THe modem howver is recent and is correctly installed. The TCP/IP settings are OK and IE vers 6.0 is set for default security settings.

Your help would be appreciated

Look at this and see what it says:

go to START-All PROGRAMS-ACCESSORIES-SYSTEM TOOLS-SYSTEM INFO-INTERNET SETTINGS-INTERNET EXPLORER- CONNECTIVETY and look at the computer IDLE time before it cuts out. You may have this set for 2 minutes or so and could be working on the computer for any amount of time but as soon as it's idle it will cut out
