A "crumb of comfort". Why crumb? Why not dollop, portion, slice etc etc? Am I right to assume that Comfort is a Loaf of Bread? The answers could shake my preconceived notions considerably and explain why I have always enjoyed purchasing expeditions to the bakeries in my area.

A crumb is a very small particle, better than nothing, perhaps, but not as good as a slice, dollop etc.

It's a form of metaphor, Ie comparing the amount of comfort to a crumb of, say, a biscuit. I don't know of any loaf known as a comfort!
