Assuming you are UK based as opposed to in a Euro country, most people would advise you to take a very limited amount out in cash for immediate expenses such as any taxi/transfer to accommodation, immediate food purchases, etc. - you will know your requirements. Beyond that it is actually unnecessary to have much cash at all because cards can take care of everything. It is fairly common knowledge that cards from Nationwide, Abbey (Zero) and the Post Office charge no commission on spending and (at least some of these) even on cash withdrawals abroad. Taking cash for all needs with you means comparing UK sources plus the liability of having the stuff on you all or most of the time.
