got antivirus xp2008 into computer and was told best way to ditch it was to do a system recovery which I have done but it keeps going back to an earlier recovery I did and saves personal backup. No use. How do I get rid of personal backup to go back to factory settings???

System recovery is useless for virus and trojan and restoring to factory settings is using a mallet to crack a walnut.

Use this:

I am positive this is free, but if it isn't, let us know.

downloaded file but after it scans and identifies problems it then costs you to get the necessary product to clean the computer
You didnt use the correct prog to do the scan.

The malware removal tool you should have downloaded is free and gets rid of Antivirus 2008.
There is an option to upgrade it, which costs, but the original prog is free.

Have used it myself on half a dozen machines so far.....

I'm running the program now to see what happens.

I'll try and point you in the right direction when it's finished scanning

thank you Ethel
I think you are clicking on the top links that say "Spyware Remover Download " and "XP Antivirus removal".

Scroll further down the page for the correct software.

which one is the correct one though???
Where it says:

Tools Needed for this fix:
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

about a third of the way down.

2. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, or MBAM, from the following location and save it to your desktop:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Download Link

That's kind of the biggest clue...
Okay, I installed the program, ran it, and it found one problem, and removed it.

No payment required

I have taken a screenshot to highlight the link you need to click.
