My girlfriend, who I've lived with for three years now, has always had cats and I'm unfortunately allergic to them. It's not a bad allergy as some could suffer with - I have to take one puff on an inhaler only once per day (usually in bed) and sometimes during the hotter months not even that. We do everything possible for me to avoid contact with the cats (they're not allowed in our bedroom, my girlfriend avoids too much contact herself etc) but will my long-term health ever be affected?

Your long term health shouldn't be affected by allergy to cats, but if you are exposed to them for longer periods of time the allergy could become worse, meaning you are having to use the inhaler more often. You could try taking a Piriton tablet every day instead of having to use an inhaler.
In the very long term the cats will die so don't replace them!
