Is it true diesel cars are more realiable than petrol cars?

Probably not the entire car, since the only difference in most is the engine itself.  The diesel engine, assuming it's an engine originally designed for diesel sevice and not a 'remanufactured' gasoline powered engine, are generally more reliable.  This is because a complicated ignition system is not required, and because the higher compression requires heavier duty blocks and cylinder heads.  Some unique service requirements pop up though.  Injectors need regular servicing, and pity the person whose friend borrowed thier car and put gasoline in the tank rather than diesel fuel...

Yes.  They're also more efficient, especially the turbo diesel engines (but some people use the turbo to thrash it a bit more).

what you also have to consider is the extra cost of a new diesel engine car. I calculated that it wasn't worth my while paying the extra �2000 to gain the extra mileage you get with diesel cars.

Diesel cars also hold their price more than petrol cars so it's worth the initial investment.
