iPhone v Blackberry

I've just got an iPhone - the idea of free internet on a phone any place any time, that actually looked like a computer screen and worked ! , really appealed.. although I only really had one use in mind - checking the Autotrader website while I'm at car auctions.

However, since I've got the iPhone home, I'm a bit disappointed... the o2 signal strength is poor where I live.. and I'm only in suburban Nottinghamshire, not the middle of the Peak district etc. If I drop the phone, I just know it'll break and as far as I can tell, although its an ipod too, you can't select any of your tracks as your ringtone.. and the in-built ringtones are awful.

So, I've got a 14 day cooling off period and I'm thinking of staying with Vodafone and getting them to give me a Blackberry... thing is, I know nothing about Blackberrys and Vodafone aren't going to give me independent advice...

So which is best and what are the pro's and con's iPhone v Blackberry.

If you are in a area with poor 3G, the iPhone will still work on the Edge network but slower. The signal strength in my home is a bit poor so I use it in wi-fi mode in the house, which is better than 3G anyway. The phone is supposed to be mobile, and you will probably find a few streets away, the network is brilliant. Lots of pubs, bars, cafes and stations have wi-fi links that are free.

I have purchased a little case for mine in case I drop it. I previous had an iPod Touch (Very similar to phone) and have used it extensively for 6 months without getting any big dents in it.

You can create your own customised ringtone in iTunes.

Choose iTunes > Preferences, click General, and then make sure Ringtones is selected.


Make sure you�re connected to the Internet.


Select the song you want to use, and then choose Store > Create Ringtone.


In the editing window that appears, choose the part of the song you want to use as the ringtone.

You can use up to 30 seconds of the song.

There is an iPhone update coming out on Friday, which is supposed to improve connectivity.

Thanks for that Gromit.... I've followed your instructions, and now found the bell symbol column to identify the tracks in the itunes store that I can use, but none of the tracks have the bell symbol next to them.... and I only updated itunes yesterday so I know its the latest version...

In honesty, I'm also pretty unhappy that it appears I have to download, and pay for again, a track I only downloaded a few days ago at a cost of 79p, simply to use it as a ringtone..
