The jury did not reach a consensus, so I think it is right that this woman has not been sentenced to death, but the fact remains that somebody microwaved a child to death.
As a rule I am against the death penalty in case of miscarriages etc..., but if it could be conclusively proved, without any room for doubt and with hard irrefutable scientific evidence as to who committed this sickening act, together with, preferably, a confession, is there any point in keeping somebody as inherently as evil as this alive?

Yes. To show that our instinctive biases have no place in the judicial system.
Like you, and anyone sane, the crime in question totally disgusts me - it's completely evil. The woman desrves the penalty she's been given fully (assuming she's guilty).
What we have to be wary of is the gut reaction that we have to be as harsh as possible in order to 'justify' ourselves or to somehow show how much we hate anyone who commits such a crime. That should go without saying
Any kind of concession to our most basic animal instincts absolutely must be kept as far as physically possible from the judicial system, even in cases where every fibre in our body tells us we should listen to them and it's uncomfortable to do so. It's a gesture of the judicial system's status as a place of neutral and objective analysis. A judicia system based on that principle is the cornerstone of political civilisation.

I am vehemently against the death penalty, but every now and again, a story comes up which tests my belief system.

Yes the crime is utterly abhorent, but our laws are what make our society civilised - there is simply no future in trying to out-do each other with how morally outraged we can be, which is purely to underloine the disgust and abhorance that any civilised person must feel.
A degree of objectivity in formulating and exectuing our laws is what keeps us from anarchy, and as Clint Eastwood's 'Dirty Harry' put it so eloquently - "...executing your neighbour because his dog pees on your lawn ..."
This is a tragedy in wnich an innocent life has been lost by the actions of an emotionally inadequate parent - huffing and puffing with self-righteous indignation from several thousnad miles away helps no-one.

I read this story last week and they were awaiting the outcome of sentencing then.I cried my eyes out at what this eveil woman did to an innocent baby just to spite her boyfriend! I say let her live on in prison for the rest of her life.......but let all the other prisoners know what she is in for and don't keep her segregated.

The death sentence would be good but to quick. She needs to be shut in a cell with hole in the door to shove bread and water through so she can spend her years thinking about it day and night.
