Some mills used the gas from their furnaces to fuel lamps and it was realised early on that using gaslight inside mills meant workers could do night shifts without dropping burning candles onto the goods.
Public gaslights were put in places like Preston Market Square around 1816. At first gaslights were more like individual monuments than functional streetlights.
In London, the theatres and large shops were quick to adopt gaslights well ahead of the rest of the country.
It was quite quickly realised that supplying gas to private houses was a business opportunity and gas companies came into existence in growing numbers by the 1850's.
