itunes compatibility

I have downloaded iTunes and imported my CD collection onto it, and I use it as my default music layer as I like the interface.

I don't plan to buy an MP3 player for a few months, but I see that all the tracks from my CD collection are encoded as MPEG4 format. If i'm to listen to my music with a portable player, will this mean I have to get an iPod, or will MPEG4 work on any MP3 player such as those by Creative?

Also, I believe that any tracks purchased from iTunes will only work on iPod. Is this true?

There is a setting in iTunes for 'Convert Selection to MP3". Its under 'Advanced' in the menu at the top. You tick the boxes next to the songs you want to convert.

MP3 files created in iTunes will be compatible with any MP3 play. I have a Rio Chiba MP3 player and only ever use iTunes.

The only trick is.. when you downloaded/purchase tunes from iTunes Music Store you can't instantly convert them into MP3s. I burn them onto CD and re-import them.
