If you're not fussy about what you want to go and see, wait until you get there and go to the TKTS booth in Times Sq the morning of the day that you want to go.

They sell the tickets vastly discounted (around 50% off) and you get better deals early in the week (ie Mon-Wed is cheaper than Thur-Sat)
I agree with chazza, queue up in Times Square on the day you want to see a show and all tickets are half price, depending on whats available but you have a choice of quite few shows.
We once went to see "Aunt Sylvia's funeral" with these tickets and it included a buffet meal half way through the show and the cast came to eat with us and chat and then the second half of the show we got a mention by name as "relatives from London flown over for the funeral", it was great.
Wait till you get there, even the concierge at your hotel can get you tickets for any show for the same night but of course this will cost you.
enjoy New York.
there's usually a queue in Times Square but there's another office in South St Seaport (down towards the southern tip of Manhattan on the east side, and a tourist attraction worth visiting) that had no queue at all when I visited last year - I got a ticket instantly.
As a native New Yorker I can only say the others are on the money with their replies. You can often get great seats as there are always single seats available in the front rows.

Safe Travel to you!!
