change in job hours...no way!!
2 Answers
Hi..hoping someone can help me...I work at a secondary school and was recently contacted by the schools' Financial Director and asked if I would like an increase in my job hours..25hrs up to 36 hrs per week..after biting his hand off in my rush to say yes I duly signed my new contract showing my new hours...alright so far!! Then my immediate line manager decided that she wanted to bring all her department staff into line and put us all on 35hr per week contracts because 2 of the staff (who are currently on 30hr per week contracts)have children at nursery/after school clubs so these hours are better for them!! I'm really peeved at this,as my children are at secondary school so I don't need to pick them up,I amply fill my new 35hr week with work, the extra pay has made a huge difference to my family income especially as my husband is being made redundant in a few weeks and it's great to be able to save a bit extra for Christmas, etc,I'd look really stupid going back to the Financial Director so soon after accepting my great offer and finally,I just don't want to reduce my working week..even by one hour!! The trouble is,I really like my line manager but she has decided to make a 'blanket' approach and inform the FD that we all want to change our hours..meaning that I would lose over 460 per year,a lot of money for me..how do I approach this line manager without appearing obstructive to her ideas and tell her of my unhappiness? and also,is she legally entitled to change my hours in this way? Any help really appreciated...Thanks..footymum

they can ask you and if you agree then you can change your contracted hours straight away. if you refuse then they can serve notice to you that they are changing your hours. if they serve notice they must give you ample notice i.e,
in the first 12 months of employment no notice is required. after 1 year then the notice is 1 week per every year served up to a maximum of 13 weeks notice. then its either accept the new contracted hours of leave.
this is how things work at my work and i think that it is the norm in the uk but we find that is better to negotiate somthing that benefits both parties rather than have conflicts.
i hope this has been some help.
