Obama, the darling of Europe...
Do you think Europe is so desperate for Obama to get to the Whitehouse that they'll ignore anything iffy about him?

All down to political correctness, i.e. first Black etc, etc,
Others could include,
Lewis Hamilton, first Black Formula One driver.
Tiger Woods, first Black to win The Masters Golf Tournament.
Trevor McDonald, first British Black newsreader.
What the hell does it matter what skin colour they are providing they are good at what they do. Why do we always have to have their colour embedded into our minds?

Eh?
What does political correctness have to do with Obama's successful nomination???
Lewis Hamilton and Tiger Woods too...nothing to do with political correctness. They win because they're good.
And Trevor MacDonald has been reading the news on telly since the early 80s, years before the initials PC went from meaning 'Police Constable' to something else.
As you so rightly say, colour shouldn't be an issue...and thus far on this thread, no-one has even mentioned his colour.

Er - don't think anyone mentioned his colour AOG - I think that's your bandwagon.

Absolutely nothing sp1814, but I think both you and jake-the-peg are getting hold of the wrong end of the stick.
I was trying to get across that the media are constantlly referring to the first Black.................... or whatever. And I think anyone who has not noticed this fact must be very hard of hearing.
The media are constantly trying to get the message over that, "eh! we are good Whites and these Blacks are our friends, look how well they have done." so patronizing.
Next time you see a politician at a school for instance on TV, notice who the media get to surround him or her, for the photo shoots? Yes you've got it ethnic minority children.
There is simply no need for it.

Your statement:

is beyond jaw-dropping.
Seriously. Think about it. What's the alternative? Round up the non-white kids and keep them hidden from the cameras?
What do you think they should do, and more to the point, why on earth does it bother you???
I swear, I cannot fathom that one. It's an incredibly odd thing to come out with.

Incidentally, you're right that the media focus on the achievements of 'the first' in any field...because it is news.
When Thatcher won the leadership of the Conservative party - that was newsworthy.
When she became PM, that was incredibly newsworthy. It would be lie to dismiss it, because it shows the development of people. In 1950, a female PM would've been unheard of. Now, it wouldn't be so newsworthy.
Firsts are always big news...in any field. I think that people feel reassured that all members of society can get to the top, not just white able-bodied men.
