Fortunately, it's not usually the case. You do get some ungrateful ******* though, but then that only teaches you to be more careful! And not do anything for them again. :O)

why are people selfish - ask yourself...why not? Why do people care about you? why should they? Answer them, and youve got your answer.

this statement i would hazard a guess is something thats come from some kind of experience youve recently had. Perhaps you should be asking yourself...why am i giving at all? Why am not thinking about me? After all, we live, like it or not, in a very selfish society (presuming your coming from "the west")

If the world was about to end - you would see selfishness dominate. Simple as.
