Thank you Ethel. I'm not too clever on these things and your reply helped a lot. I got rid of IE because I much prefer Firefox (IE was preinstalled) and now T/bird can't connect to the server!! I've read that there are issues with Comodo and your answer seems to confirm this. So now it seems its a choice of dumping Comodo or going back to IE.
