As a child i was always told to eat the Crust on my bread as it was "good for me". Is there any truth in it? is there any proof that Bread crust is good for you? or can i keep cutting it off?

I was told the same thing, as are 'most' children, but I think it's only to save waste. However, it's only the more baked edges of the same bread, so I don't see any difference in the nutrition value. I sometimes cut of the crust, but it usually depends on the type of bread.

*off

I was always told it would make my hair curly...  What rubbish parents and grandparents tell their children at mealtimes just to get a clean plate!

In fact, if the bread is traditionally baked rather than steam baked (i.e. it has a dark crust) then you are probably best cutting off the crust as burned and charred foods have been linked to causing cancer.

i was always told it would put hairs on my chest, but i could never understand it because my dad has no chest hair at all.

it must've worked somehow because i'm now half man, half wookiee!

But why would a child prefer to have curly hair if they haven't got it already?

Everyone loves stuffing, and here's even more reason to love it. A German study says bread crust is a rich source of cancer-fighting antioxidants, and bread stuffing is made with lots of crust.

Eating bread crusts will make your hair curl
A lot of these old wives' tales have been dreamed up to encourage children to clear their plate and eliminate wasted food, and this myth is a good example of that (and my straighter than straight hair is a testament to it!). So eating the crusts may not save you money on perming solution, but recent studies show that the crust may well be the healthiest part of the loaf. German scientists have discovered a cancer-fighting antioxidant, which is formed during the baking process. It is produced on the outside of the loaf as the temperature rises, making the crust 8 times richer in the antioxidant than the soft middle.

Well I love crusty bread, but then again my dad has been a baker for nearly 30 years so I've been brought up on it.  The crust is my favourite bit, and I feel better for eating it.  I have curly hair (not on my chest).

Ok, I promise this is my last post but I feel I have to support the bread crust.  This is the best link.

Ok natalie - you've convinced me, I shall be a good girl & endeavour to eat all my crusts as from today!

Fersh crusty bread dipped in Heinz Tomato Soup - yummy!

natalie - I bet your Dad has never heard of 'fersh' bread! I meant of course - fresh!

LOL Bernardo.......I used to eat the crusts, but actually stopped for a while after my mums friend told her the curly hair fib.  I didn't want curly hair, so avoided the crusts until my mum put me right!!

Go crusts!

I love the crusts toasted - delicious
I thought they were higher in fibre?
