You have to register and pay a fee. I used it to find out the owner of a derelict house, but you can find business' too.

I would try Companies House, too. It should cost about �1 by credit card. Another thing, it should be possible to inspect on request the register of members (which includes shareholders) of the company by visiting its Head Office.
