I want to make my fiancee away for a nice 'cheap 'n' cheerful' (but not backpacking) weekend for her birthday.  I was thinking Oslo, Rome or Barcelona but they all work out quite expensive.  We would be going for a little history/culture, but mainly bars and restaurants.  Any recommendations?

Tallinn is a good bet - it's touted as "the new Prague". but without the boozed up stag parties and sleaze, although I'm sure that will come. Ljubljana is meant to have a good buzz but don't know much else about it.

Otherwise Copenhagen is great, Berlin I really like and you can get cheap fares to both. Lisbon is fun, Brussels OK but you need to know where you're going.

Valencia is supposed to be the coming place at the moment, the budgets fly there but it hasn't yet caught on to jacking up its prices as yet.

Try Lille on Eurostar. There's a little Bradt guidebook. Lots of good food and drink, nice art museum. (Don't personally know about bars and stuff.) Was a European City of Culture last year.

I'd go for prague

I'd go for Krakow. Cheap, cheerful and wonderful!

Historic buildings, museums and churches in the day. fantastic restaurants and vodka bars in the evening.

Easyjet fly there from Luton.

We've been twice and love it!

Ljubljana is pretty good too. Loads of restaurants and bars on the shady embankment overlooking the river.Relaxed atmosphere and, with narrow cobbled streets overlooked by a castle on a hill, a very picturesque old town. Definately romantic.

Thanks for all your suggestions, but I did actually find a good deal to go to Venice (as neither of us have been there yet).

I have a list of places to go for the rest of the year now, so thanks for all your replies.

try naples it is not far rome and you can get atrain there for about �7one way also nearby is romantic sorrento and the isle of capri sorrento is 2 euros by train as for hotels check out www.octopustravel.co.uk for their best deals i usually stay at the hotel plaza which is two minutes walk from napoli central station and is good finaly from the airport dont take the alibus 5 euros go to the tobacco stands and ask for a 9o minute bus ticket about 50p proceed outside and catch a 3s bus to piazza garibaldi

Regarding the Krakow suggestion, you can also fly there with Whizz air really cheap.
